Why do you stand out of the crowd? When applying spot UV print and coating to your printed pieces, you are elevating the perception of quality and elevating the beauty of your piece when compared with regular flat printing
What does UV Coating mean?It means that Ultra Violet Light is used to cure (more about what cure means below) the coating
What is UV Coating and what is Spot UV Coating?Let’s understand what UV coating is first, and then we’ll narrow it down to spot UV A UV coating is a synthetic, liquid coating (polymer) that is applied on top of ink-printed paper, cardstock or synthetic substrates. When we refer in the printing trade to UV coating, we understand that the whole sheet of paper, or cardstock or synthetic matter will be fully covered by the liquid. Spot UV in understood as the application of a coating of UV in certain areas of the sheet or substrate.
What are the steps to have a Spot UV postcard produced? How do I prepare the files if I want that effect? There are 3 steps on the production side:
How does UV coating “cure” or “dry”?You might be familiar with how inks dry. Think about inks that you would use to paint a wall, or inks that you would use to paint on canvas and the most likely answer is to let them dry by themselves. When having dried, the inks have somehow gained strength. That process is known as curing of the inks. The way in which UV coatings “dry” or “cure” is by exposure to intense ultraviolet light. The coating would not solidify unless it is exposed to ultraviolet light. It will stay in a liquid state if not exposed. The ultraviolet light generates a chemical reaction in this product and solidifies. Because there are no solvents or water, there are no fumes or volatiles evaporated.
What is the effect of spot UV?
When applying spot UV, the highest the contrast of brightness between the background and the spot UV, the nice the effect is.
Therefore, if you select a matte base, a first matte finishing is applied to the piece, and on top of it, the spot UV is applied.
The prices offered for this product do not change if your print just has black and white on one side as opposed to full color.
FULL COLOR / BLACK AND WHITE: Choose full color both sides, even if one of the sides will just receive black printing.
Spot UV File Preparation
When you require spot UV to be applied on top of your printed piece, our team’s first question is ”Where should we apply the spot UV?” “Which areas of the piece should look shiny as opposed to background-matt?”
The short answer is that we need an extra File that indicates exactly where the spot UV will be applied.
SPOT UV EXTRA FILE: This extra file must have registration marks exactly with the printing files. It must have crop marks that match the main printing job.
This file must ONLY show the areas that will receive UV coating. Those areas will be indicated by full black areas. 100% K (black) (only black color, no CMYK accepted for spot UV files). The other areas should be 0% K (black)
Black areas on that file: Will be covered with UV coating
Transparent/White areas on that file: Won’t be covered by UV coating, therefore exposing the bare stock used to print.
The artwor that will be printed has to be submitted along a file that tells us where to apply UV.
Spot UV files are independent files that should register perfectly on top of the printing file, that indicate where on the piece the spot UV will be applied.
The areas where spot UV is applied should be 100% black (100% K). No grayscale accepted.
It's either black or nothing.
Specialized software is required so if you don't have the capability, you can hire our graphics team to do it on your behalf.
